Social Location - What are you doing?

This was a fictional live brief set by Kin who asked us to communicate Nokia’s new So-Lo (Social Location) concept within an exhibition space. So-Lo is basically a smooshing together of GPS and Social Networking and will be a feature of the N97, due to launch on June 2009. Our team of four designed this circular interactive seating.
You can see the model in action above… Just imagine it’s a slightly squashy giant white circular seat, and the hands are people. The white bits in the middle are words that make little sentences like “Fancy a cup of tea?” between the people sitting down.

The Social and The Anti Social
The SOCPA (Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005) law means that it is illegal to demonstrate within one kilometer of Westminster without a permit. However, the law doesn’t actually state what constitutes a demonstration so I went to Westminster and stood outside Downing Street (without a permit) in an attempt to find out…
The Policeman at the gates told me that the only way to find out if I needed a permit would be to arrest me and let the courts decide. I didn’t want to push my luck and end up with an ASBO so I left it at this.
Fortunately I wasn’t arrested but I did have my photo taken by lots of tourists.
I still don’t know what a demonstration is and the Police don’t seem to know either, but I think it helps if you’re a girl.

Eleven Point Seven Years
Around 70% of UK marriages end in divorce and the average marriage lasts 11.7 years.
These statistics were used to calculate a divorce date for a recently married couple and this date was added to the ring cushion, accompanying the traditional symbol of eternity.
The embroidered flowers are Fig Flower for argument and longevity, Lily of the Valley for forgiveness and a return to happiness, Saffron meaning do not abuse the relationship, Sweet Pea for departure, meaning thank you for a lovely time and Spruce for hope in adversity.

The Fear
Scientists have proved that a lifetime of fearful stress can have an accumulated and serious effect on your health.
Lack of sleep disrupts every physiological function in the body. It is linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and causes chronic stress. Stress can trigger brain cell loss, which impairs memory and increases your chances of having a heart attack or stroke.
In a nutshell, people who sleep less and experience high levels of stress have a shorter life expectancy.
If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from somniphobia (a fear of sleep) you’ll be needing this book to help you save what time you have left.
